Golf Courses on the Western Slope
Go West, young man - golfing and living in western Colorado By Teena Hammond Gomez If a peaceful, serene oasis appeals, then look no farther than the beauty of western Colorado. In this pastoral land, visitors are first stunned by the breathtaking vistas and then they’re amazed by the world-class amenities that include some of the best golf courses in the world. Cobble Creek, in the city of Montrose at 5,800 feet elevation, is an hour north of Telluride. It’s one of several must-see golf courses and residential communities on the Western slope. The prices are less than in other pricey resort towns and the golf courses are, well, nothing short of spectacular. Better yet, the area boasts a mild climate that will keep golfers teeing off long after other fairways are covered with snow. These well-designed courses feature dramatic topography and glorious views along with the chance to experience championship golf, tennis, walking and bicycling trails. At Cobble Creek Golf Club, you’ll find an 18-hole, 6,983-yard, par-72 course surrounded by a 445-acre planned community. This valley course offers 360-degree views of the Grand Mesa and San Juan mountains. Don’t miss the brand new clubhouse with its pro shop, locker rooms and fitness center as well as Lorenzo’s fine dining restaurant and outdoor patio. Real estate at Cobble Creek is another enlightening experience, with feature-packed homes at affordable price points. Here you’ll find a 445-acre master-planned community with a new eight-acre park with a children’s play area. Single-family homes start at $247,000 in the Spruce Point community within Cobble Creek, and top out at $760,000 for a home fronting the golf course. There are patio homes ranging from $333,500 to $475,000. If you want to have your own custom home built, spacious lots fronting the golf course are available, ranging from $123,000 to $189,000. Other lots off of the golf course begin at $98,000. Also in Montrose, you’ll find The Bridges Golf & Country Club, with it’s par-71 course that was ranked one of the “Top 10 New Courses in America” by Golf Magazine. The classic Nicklaus Design course features a natural setting with native plants, rock features and waterfalls spread out over 400 acres. This 18-hole, 7,200-yard course includes an old-fashioned styled general store with a snack bar at the 9-hole halfway point and the luxurious 29,000-square-foot main clubhouse. Currently, there are more than 300 single-family homes and more than 200 Fairway villas and townhomes planned for development on the 400 acres of The Bridges Golf & Country Club. Home sites are available fronting the golf course, with views of 12,000 and 14,000-foot mountain peaks, lake views, or close to the future swim and tennis club. If living on a secluded cul-de-sac is more your style, that’s available, too. Heading a half-hour south to Ridgway, Colorado, you’ll find the Divide Ranch & Club. This award-winning, 18-hole, 7,039-yard, par-72 golf course sits up against the San Juan mountain range, dominated by the 14,150-foot-high Mount Sneffels and the Cimarron Range to the east. Here you’ll find gorgeous mountain scenery in a rural setting with plenty of charm. Not to mention a new clubhouse with a pro golf shop on site. Home sites have just become available at the Divide Ranch & Club, and they’re priced from $89,900 to $129,000. During a limited special offer, expiring October 15, you’ll even nab an exclusive gold membership at no extra charge. This includes unlimited golf with no additional fees – the ultimate for any golfer. The Western slopes of Colorado are filled with serene and comfortable places to golf, live and play while enjoying the beauty of soaring mountain peaks, abundant wildlife and mild, four-season weather.
